The Hazards of Winter Motorcycle Riding

Like any outdoor hobby, when you live in a state that experiences cold or snowy winters like Ohio you want to make the most of every warm day. We see this to be true for those who ride motorcycles. The moment the ice melts and the temperatures rise, we see the roads filled with happy motorcycle riders once again being able to do what they love.

But when is it time to pack up the bike for winter? Some motorcyclists have a hard time saying goodbye to the season. But the truth is winter conditions can be incredibly dangerous to drive a motorcycle in. Your risk of getting into an accident on a motorcycle in the winter is much higher than in warmer months, for a multitude of reasons.

Next time you’re tempted to take your bike out on a cold day, let’s be reminded of these winter motorcycle hazards.

  • Wind Chill- The harsh wind chills brought by certain winter weather will be even more severe and dangerous when riding a motorcycle.
  • Reduced Traction- Even with snow tires on your motorcycle, the handling, and tracking of a two-wheel vehicle could put you at an increased risk of slipping and falling off of your bike.
  • Weather Changes- Checking the weather before a motorcycle ride is a good practice, but it doesn’t guarantee that conditions won’t change.
  • Reduced visibility- Severe snow may cause you to become snowblind and force you to the side of the road.
  • Cold exposure-in the event you get in an accident or get stranded in the cold you could face a risk of hypothermia or other health hazards.

If you do choose to take your motorcycle out on a winter day, make sure you and your motorcycle are prepared for the conditions you could encounter.

  • Dress in layers- Base thermal layers and wind-resistant outer layers will be essential to staying warm on your ride.
  • Check your tire pressure- Lower temperatures can reduce your tire pressure, which in turn reduces the handling capabilities of your tires.
  • More Break Time-With less than ideal road conditions, you should increase the distance you give between the vehicles ahead of you, and start braking for stop signs earlier.
  • Avoid deserted areas-If you end up sliding off the road or becoming stranded, you’ll want to be somewhere that is regularly trafficked by passersby who can stop to help.
