Can You Drive a Motorcycle in All Weather Conditions?

We know the motorcycle community is passionate about riding. Owning and riding motorcycles is less of a hobby, pastime, or mode of transportation and more about a way of life to motorcyclists. Those who enjoy this way of life are often a part of communities and groups that share these passions together.

These communities often get together to go on long rides or share in their favorite activity. And don’t even get us started on the hours spent in the garage cleaning, refining, fixing, and upgrading their bikes.

Just as some love golf, or knitting, motorcyclists LOVE to ride motorcycles.

With that said, if you are a motorcyclist you are itching to get on the road as often as possible. It can be hard when the use of your favorite vehicle has to depend on perfect weather conditions.

Safety is a big part of the motorcyclist way of life. In 2019, motorcyclists were nearly 29 times more likely than passenger car occupants to die in a crash per vehicle miles traveled.

With this being said, safe motorcycle driving practices must be followed at all times and precautions must be taken, such as wearing a helmet and other appropriate gear.

Considering the weather is also something that should be considered before going out for a ride. Not all weather conditions are safe for motorcyclists to drive in. Not only is it important to observe the weather at the moment but also look ahead to what is expected for the entirety of your trip.

Let’s take a look at some of the safe motorcycle driving practices for different weather conditions.

Rain

The best thing you can do in rainy conditions is slow down. Rain causes motor oil and other substances to rise to the surface of the roads which can make them especially slippery. Because of this the roads are slickest in the first hour of rain, if you can avoid driving at that time, you may help avoid an accident.

Stay clear of standing water and puddles as you don’t want to risk getting water in your engine or impairing your view or the view of vehicles around you with the splash it can create.

Wind

Be aware of windy conditions or even areas where wind may pick up like going over bridges. Many drivers tense up when driving in the wind, but it can actually be safer to stay loose and continue to adjust your steering with the wind. In extreme windy conditions it is best to take cover.

High Heat

When biking in the high heat be sure to check your tire pressure. A low tire on hot asphalt can lead to a blow out. Consider skipping the leather on especially hot days and choose breathable clothing that still keeps you protected.

Low Temperatures

One of the most important things to consider when driving a motorcycle in the cold or winter conditions is to be sure you have adequate tread on your tires. Not all tires can function safely over ice or snow. Cold weather also requires you to check your tire pressure and if you can, store your bike somewhere where your tires can stay warm.

Experts do not advise that you ride a motorcycle while snow is actively falling or on any especially icy or snowy roads.

Unfortunately, due to the nature of a motorcycle versus the passenger and commercial vehicles around them, motorcyclists will always be at a higher risk of accident or injury on the road. Following these safe driving tips and being aware of the conditions around you will certainly help you become a safer driver.
